Planning chapter almost done

However, I’m really pleased with how it’s shaping up and I think people will find it useful. On an exciting note, the evolving book can now be purchased at an early bird discount.

Hi Andy, I am still looking for advice on what microphone to use. May me worth being more specific in your book about uses. For example I will need to be able to record telephone interviews as well as screencasts and sometimes in the field. Is there one microphone that fits all. What would you recommend for these scenarios. Do you have additional hardware to connect your sm58 to the PC. How to you record the roundtable discussions you have. This would be really valuable information for your book.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Hi Barry. I’m a fan of the Zoom H4 – the portable digital audio recorder. It’s versatile – use it in the studio or in the field with it’s built-in microphone . Use it to record Skype calls with the output of the computer into one of its external inputs and an external mic into the other. For the studio and outdoors, the good old SM58 is hard to beat – keep it close to the mouth though – it has strong drop off as you move away – this is good for rejecting background noise though.
Update: For the studio I still love the good old Shure SM58 if you’re happy to purchase a USB interface to connect it to the computer. I recently did a YouTube video going over the use of the Shure SM58 which might be worth taking a look at. Here’s another YouTube video of a review of the Zoom H4.
